Berlin Wall

In 1961 the East German communists built a wall through Berlin. Thus an East and West Berlin emerged. The Berlin wall. That was to stop the flight from East to West Berlin. There was a lot of poverty and misery in East Berlin. If you were caught, you were shot.

Brandenburger Tor

The Brandenburg Gate is located on the famous Unter Den Linden shopping street.
The Brandenburg Gate is the only preserved city gate in Berlin. In the past, the location of the gate was the city boundary of the center. Those who wanted to go through the gate had to pay toll.
Construction started in 1788 and was completed in 1791. The gate is 26 meters high, 65.5 meters wide and 11 meters deep. The statue on the building, a quadriga (two-wheeled wagon with four horses), a sculpture by Johan Gottfried Schadow, was taken by Napoleon to Paris as a spoils of war in 1806.  It was brought back to Germany by a German marshal eight years later and declared a symbol of victory.

Holocaust Monument

The Holocaust monument in Berlin is a memorial to commemorate the persecution of the Jews during the Second World War. It consisted of 2711 concrete blocks ranging in height from 20 cm to 4.70 meters with a spacing of 95 cm between them.

Checkpoint Charlie 

For foreigners, Checkpoint Charlie was the only possible way to get to East Berlin by car or bus. When you went to Berlin by car from the Netherlands you always entered West Berlin and you had to pass this border crossing to get to the east. Only foreigners who did not come from West Berlin, West Germany or Allied countries were allowed to pass the border post.
